One big step for man as astronaut controls robot from ISS

European experts have pulled off a major advance that might one day help build new worlds in space after an astronaut in the International Space Station remotely guided a robot on Earth by feel.
Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen performed the breath-taking experiment in which he placed a peg into a very tight hole on Monday under the careful control of the European Space Agency.

While orbiting some 400 kilometres (250 miles) above Earth, Mogensen took control of the Interact Centaur rover which has a pair of arms for delicate, high-precision work.
The blue-and-white fibreglass robot, which cost less than 200,000 euros ($224,000) to build, also has a camera on its head which allows the controller to directly see the task it is performing.

But sight is not the most important sense in this project. It is touch.

Smokers who switch to e-cigarettes may breathe fewer toxins

Smokers who switch to e-cigarettes - even if it's only some of the time - may dramatically reduce their exposure to air pollutants including carbon monoxide and acrolein, a British study suggests.Researchers gave e-cigarettes to 40 smokers who said they wanted to quit. After four weeks, the 16 participants using only e-cigarettes had about an 80 percent drop in exposure both to carbon monoxide and to acrolein, a harmful breakdown product that is also in some e-cigarettes' vapor.
The 17 participants who swapped some regular cigarettes for the electronic version had a 52 percent decline in carbon monoxide exposure and a 60 percent decline for acrolein, according to the study published in Cancer Prevention Research.

MTN launches mobile money transfer between Uganda and Rwanda

Mobile money service provider MTN Uganda has launched cross-border money transfer services between Uganda and neighbouring country Rwanda.
This new Mobile Money service will allow customers in both countries to transact via Mobile Money without having to change currencies. The service enables an MTN customer in Rwanda to send money in Rwandese Francs to a recipient in Uganda who will receive it in Uganda Shillings. The recipient has to be a customer of MTN Uganda to receive the transfer.
“Technology is helping us eliminate national borders, enabling a unified digital and mobile financial services world. We are delighted to offer a solution that further enhances this agenda," said Mr Phrase Lubega, MTN Uganda's General manager in charge of Financial Services.

Wayne Rooney can reach 70 England goals - Gary Lineker

Wayne Rooney can score 70 England goals and his international record will last for "at least a decade", says former striker Gary Lineker.

The 29-year-old forward netted his 50th goal in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Switzerland to move clear of Sir Bobby Charlton's total of 49 England goals.
"It's going to be a long time before anyone gets close to Wayne," ex-England captain Lineker told BBC Radio 5 live.
"He's still going so could take it to 60 or 70 if he maintains his fitness."
Match of the Day presenter Lineker, who scored 48 England goals and is third in the all-time list, added: "Wayne does not reach 30 years old until next month and there's no-one behind him in the team with any kind of goals tally."

US Presidential bid for anti-virus mogul John McAfee

Maverick tech veteran John McAfee has confirmed he is running for US president.

Mr McAfee, who founded an anti-virus company of the same name, filed a candidacy statement on Tuesday.
The US entrepreneur, 69, attracted international attention when he went on the run in 2012 following the murder of his neighbour in Belize.
He has launched a campaign website and will share more details about his candidacy later.
"I live in a country that has passed so many laws, that, at an average reading speed, would take me 600 years to read, reading 24 hours a day," Mr McAfee told the BBC.
